well, if I had a driver connecting directly to Xsane, then I could get the raw image, and decide for myself how much loss of quality I want in my JPEG.ĮDIT: It turns out for these versions of the drivers, on Ubuntu 18.04, I in fact do have a SANE back-end: $ sudo sane-find-scanner Other tools like Simple Scan or Xsane are not needed.

The worst thing about this, is that I get no "raw" image - I only get JPEG (and JPEG is embedded into the PDF too), with all the loss in quality and blockyness that entails.
